Bipolar Disorder: Different from Depression
Bipolar Disorder: Different from Depression
People often refer to sudden mood swings between extreme happiness and deep sadness as "manic depression." However, the official psychiatric term for this condition is bipolar disorder. If such mood changes persist for an extended period, it may be a sign of bipolar disorder, which differs from depression in various ways. Today, we will take a closer look at what bipolar disorder is.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by alternating episodes of
mania, where mood and confidence are excessively elevated, and depression,
where mood drops significantly along with self-esteem. It is commonly known as
manic depression or simply bipolar disorder.
If these symptoms continue for weeks or
even months, it is important to consider the possibility of this condition.
During manic episodes, individuals may feel excessively energetic, require
little to no sleep without feeling tired, talk more than usual, and exhibit
unusually high levels of excitement.
How is Bipolar Disorder Different from Depression?
When mania becomes severe, individuals may display aggressive behavior, leading
to conflicts with others, and in some cases, they may experience hallucinations
or delusions. On the other hand, during depressive episodes, individuals may
feel irritated, frequently angry, experience low self-esteem, guilt, and
self-doubt, and have difficulty concentrating. In severe cases, suicidal thoughts
or attempts may occur, making careful attention and support crucial.
While the exact cause of bipolar disorder
is unknown, SAYU Psychiatric Clinic suggests that it may be linked to irregular
neural activity and imbalances in neurotransmitters, which affect the brain’s
ability to regulate mood.
How is Bipolar Disorder Treated?
Currently, bipolar disorder is treated using medication and therapy.
* Medication treatment : Mood stabilizers
such as valproate, lithium, and carbamazepine are commonly used, along with
antipsychotic medications like risperidone and aripiprazole. While
antidepressants may also be prescribed in some cases, all medications should be
carefully selected based on a thorough consultation with a psychiatrist.
* Therapy: In some cases, therapy alone may
be sufficient, especially for milder symptoms. Many patients experience
significant improvement with consistent counseling sessions, making early
intervention crucial for better treatment outcomes.
