Involuntary Behaviors and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Hello.
We are Sayu Mental Health
Clinic, here to help you express your mind.
If you find yourself obsessively
organizing or reacting sensitively to a speck of dust in your daily life, this may
indicate perfectionism or obsessive-compulsive disorder. When OCD interferes
with daily life, it is important to receive appropriate treatment. Today, we’ll
explain the symptoms and types of OCD.
OCD is a type of obsessive-compulsive
and related disorder characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive
behaviors. For example, repeatedly worrying about whether the gas is on is an
obsessive thought, while constantly checking the stove to ease anxiety is a
compulsive behavior.
These behaviors consume significant
time and energy, causing social and occupational distress. It’s important to
seek proper care at a nearby medical facility if OCD symptoms appear.
The causes are complex and often
include neurobiological and psychological factors. Serotonin and GABA
deficiencies are known contributors. Serotonin calms the brain, and its
deficiency may impair control, while GABA regulates excitation, and a lack of
it may heighten anxiety, resulting in repetitive compulsions.
Psychological causes stem from
irrational automatic thoughts. Treatments include behavioral therapy and
medication—antidepressants that regulate serotonin can be effective.
Since most people cannot control OCD
alone, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. If left untreated, it can
lead to depression or anxiety.
Types of OCD include contamination,
checking, arranging, and hoarding. For example:
·
Contamination
OCD: excessive washing/cleaning due to fear of dirt
·
Checking OCD:
repetitive checking behaviors
·
Arranging OCD:
anxiety if things are not perfectly aligned
·
Hoarding OCD:
fear or anxiety about discarding items
These types often require professional treatment. If symptoms interfere with daily life, consult a mental health professional.
Recovery begins with acknowledging
one’s condition and working to release obsessive thoughts. If perfectionism is
overwhelming, counseling and treatment can help.
