Precautions for Taking Sleeping Pills & Understanding Drug Dependence
Hello, we are Sayu Mental Health Clinic, here to help
those struggling with sleep disorders get better quality rest. Many people use
sleeping pills due to insomnia. However, overuse of sedative substances can
lead to drug dependence, which requires great caution. Today, we'll explore
safety guidelines for sleeping pills and what to do when facing sleep issues.
What Are Sleeping Pills?
Sleeping pills are medications used to help people
with insomnia fall asleep or stay asleep. Some sleeping pills can cause
dependence or withdrawal symptoms, so it's recommended to take them only at
prescribed dosages and for a short term. If discontinuing, it's best to taper
off gradually. Dependence on sleeping pills—often involving benzodiazepines—can
result in toxic side effects due to excessive use. This is one of the more
common forms of drug addiction.
Safety Precautions When Taking Sleeping Pills
Overdose of sleeping pills may overly suppress the
central nervous system, leading to decreased consciousness and difficulty
breathing. These symptoms are more likely when other medications are taken
concurrently or if the person has cardiovascular conditions. To avoid drug
toxicity, please take note of the following:
- Do not take sleeping pills with alcohol. The sedative effect can be dangerously intensified.
- Avoid combining with other medications or continuing for more than 2 weeks without consulting a medical professional.
- After
taking the medication, refrain from operating machinery or driving.
If You Have Sleep Disorders
If you are struggling with persistent sleep
disturbances, take the prescribed dose once per day before bedtime as directed
by your doctor. Be careful to follow the dosage exactly. If you experience
excessive sedation or symptoms of dependency, consult your physician to adjust the
dose or seek further treatment.
In cases where you cannot fall asleep easily at night
or frequently wake up and can't fall back asleep, these may be early signs of
insomnia. If you experience such symptoms, it’s best to visit a nearby clinic
promptly for evaluation and support.
